Amazing humans
There are some really amazing people out there in the community. They fly under the radar of big business, however what they are contributing is selfless and nothing short of phenomenal.
Bec Barber turned up last year, quiet, nervous and a little unsure. When she spoke, however, she came to life. She teared up as she spoke about her dream, to provide social and life skills development to kids on the Eyre Peninsula in South Australia. Bec works with kids on the autism spectrum, ranging from high functioning to barely verbal. Bec knows each child, their cues and their personalities. At least one day each fortnight she travels over 400km to see one of her blossoms.
Bec wanted to know how to set up her business properly so that the kids could receive the services that they need. Social Steps EP is all about the kids. Bec's house is slowly being turned into a mecca for these children. Resources will multiply, and the 'little blossoms' will be able to cocoon in the sensory swings. These swings are specially designed so that the kids feel safe, their sensory needs met.
People not on the autism spectrum don't experience the same intense needs. Kids flap as a way of releasing energy. They need weighted blankets when they feel overwhelmed to help them relax and feel safe, or a sensory toy to help them reset. Behaviour is a form of communication, even when these kids are acting out they are trying to tell you something. This is Bec's mantra. She's sees independence, humour and intellect so easily dismissed by the larger community.
So, thank you Bec. There are many families whose lives have changed by having you become part of theirs.
